Low Emission Water Transport Solution for Green Cities
The Tonbo solar hybrid ferry is a cutting-edge low emission passenger ferry being developed by Eco Marine Power. The Tonbo is being designed to take advantage of the latest advances in hybrid marine power, energy storage and solar module technologies in addition to using unique design concepts developed by Eco Marine Power.
Tonbo means dragonfly in Japanese and the name was chosen because it reflects the wing-like manner by which the solar modules are mounted on the vessel and the resemblance the front area of the vessel has to the eyes of the insect.
The overall design will allow the vessel to be configured for a variety of applications and also enable the solar-electric hybrid power system to be applied to various types of ferries, work boats and other vessels. The movable solar panel array will allow the vessel to move under low bridges and also be configured so that they can take full advantage of the available solar energy.
The Tonbo will use electric motors to provide propulsion with the on-board electricity being provided via a system of generators, batteries and solar modules. An on-board rapid charging system will enable Tonbo to rapidly recharge it's batteries when alongside even for relatively short periods in addition to them being charged as needed via the solar modules and generator. The vessel will also be equiped with a sophisticated Battery Management System (BMS) from Corvus Energy of Canada.
